The Latest Update!
Our newly renovated parking lot will feature a permeable gravel grid system that will house our market, 45 foot climbing tower, our biodiesel shed, greenhouse and 28 parking spaces! Indoor plans for the community space include a large room where we will show our weekly activist films, breakdown our weekly food delivery, host community classes & events, offer yoga classes & operate our kids programming. Our space will be as green as can be - a showroom of sorts featuring geo-thermal and solar thermal systems to warm our floors, along with our pellet stove. PV panels will help defray our energy usage while our green roof will help to insulate. We'll house our compost worms (who made it through the winter!) in our greenhouse where we will grow our sprouts! An this is just the beginning!
Our Summer Youth Activism program will feature the following: morning meditation & yoga, storytime (for younger ones), environmental themes, hands-on activities (arts, food preparation, gardening)and physical conditioning (obstacle courses, rock climbing, kayacking). All this with an overview of an in-depth understanding of the preciousness of our planet and steps to take to become stewards for Mother Earth. The camp will be offered Mon-Fri from 9am-4pm starting July 9th with optionals for families such as weekend adventure trips. Older children will experience work on a real farm - helping to harvest crops and then learn the business aspect by running our Friday evening Farm Stand. The kids will eat all organic meals & snacks, eat food they grow themselves and learn how this is a first step in saving our planet. They will become empowered and enthusiastic about their role as leaders in the years to come. We will begin accepting registations April 20th. You must be a co-op member to enroll your child(ren). Some scholarships will be available for families living in Hartford.
Membership is growing as well as our online community! A Saturday morning food delivery is offered to members who have either paid in full or made a $55 deposit. We are looking to grow this aspect of our co-op immediately by partnering with the cafe to offer not only bulk foods (through United Northeast Co-Op) & local produce from both CT farmers and New England farmers but raw food boxes and other sustainable products that will be delivered to members across the state. We have a core group of "green" businesses who are on board and are looking to build a strong local economy and offer their sustainable stuff to co-op members (biofuels, organic mattresses, home building supplies...). If you are interested in any aspect of what we are doing now is the time to get on board! Welcome!
